Dear Cinephiles / Colleagues / Friends,

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Stay tuned for our next Special Screening, "A POET ON THE FRONTLINE", a documentary on a significant contemporary polish litarary figure, Ryszard Kapuscinski, who is internationally well-known as "Indiana Jones with a notepad”, a legend among his peers who has been looking for the truths of human experience in the most dangerous places on earth.

Monthly Screening on Sunday 28 November:

"Léolo" is a multi-award win-&-nomination film by Quebecois director Jean-Claude Lauzon (including "Golden Palm" nomination at Cannes Film Festiva...l in 1992).

The film tells the story of Léo Lauzon (Maxime Collin), a young boy living in a Montreal tenement with his dysfunctional family. He uses his active fantasy life and the book L'avalée des avalés by Québécois novelist Réjean Ducharme to escape the reality of his life. After deciding that his mother (Ginette Reno) was impregnated not by his father, but by an Italian tomato, he rechristens himself Léolo, and begins to have sexual fantasies about his neighbour Bianca (Giuditta del Vecchio).

Gilbert Sicotte, as the adult Léolo, narrates the film. The cast also includes Pierre Bourgault, Andrée Lachapelle, Denys Arcand, Julien Guiomar and Germain Houde.*

It was Lauzon's final film; regretfully, he died in a plane crash in 1997 while working on his next project.

The history of cinema in Quebec started on June 27, 1896 when the French Louis Minier inaugurated the first movie projection in North America in a Montreal theatre room. However, it would have to wait until the 1960s before a genuine Quebec cinema industry would emerge. Since 1943, approximately 620 feature length films have been produced, or partially produced by the Quebec film industry.
